Marriage is honorable among all, and the (marriage) bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
It seems fitting that this verse fell on a Sabbath. This was certainly not by my design but it is fitting? Why? Well this is embarrassing to admit but among some (too many) Seventh-day Adventists and probably others there is a debate about whether it is ok to have sex on God's holy day.
The truly sad part is that this question/debate underscores a much more serious problem. It betrays the reality that many see sex as dirty, a guilty pleasure that God tolerates but certainly doesn't endorse, especially not on His Holy Day.
Let's just be truthful and frank. If God is the Creator (He is) then God created sex (He did). Growing up there was a Seventh-day Adventist couple I knew that taught openly that sex was for creating children and nothing more. Sex for pleasure was sin. Really?! Then why did God create it? Why did he add parts that were strictly for sexual pleasure? He could have made procreation a completely mundane event like getting a driver's license or shaking hands. God created orgasms and the physical ability to have them. (Yes I just said that, but not to be shocking, but because it is the truth) If you are a Bible believing Christian and you embrace God's ability to "speak the worlds into existence" then you should really embrace the truth of what is being presented here. Why? Because it shoots a big hole in the premise of natural selection, Darwin's basis for evolution. He and no one else has an explanation for this: How do orgasms fit into natural selection and survival of the fittest? Of course they have no explanation for love and bonding or even emotions in general for that matter.
God created all these good things, not a system where you get ahead by destruction and selfishness.
When God was done creating He declared "It is very good". Adam and Eve were created Friday afternoon. When do you think their honeymoon was?
Now why am I belabouring this point so graphically? Because sex is holy and good and designed by God and any thought that it is dirty or shameful or anything or negative you want to add is flat out unBiblical and denies at it's root the Creatorship of God.
Now back to the verse at hand. Here is the literal word for word translation of the verse:
Marriage is precious, and married sexual intercourse is to be indeed untainted (by) sexual immorality and adulterers God will judge.
Strong language. Why? Because Marriage and sex are holy. They are not to be messed with. Sex before marriage is cheating on your future spouse. It will create bonds and memories you can never disassociate from and you will bring them into your marriage later. Sex outside of your marriage while you are married is the worst thing you can do to the relationship. It is the only specific act Jesus described as a marriage killer.
I am big on freedom because God is big on freedom. The truth is we can do as you please. The reality is all our choices will have consequences. This is a truth you cannot escape no matter who you are.
So satan is busy tempting us to have sex with anyone and everyone but our spouse because he knows sex outside marriage is destructive on levels we don't even fully understand yet and sex inside marriage is holy, and bonding, and powerful and good and designed by God thus he (satan) hates it.
When you have something of value, cherish it, and protect it, and embrace it. Sex with your spouse on Sabbath? Absolutely!
