A Sanctuary For Him

Ephesians 3:14 "For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
The great Hope of the Christian is found in the promise Jesus made before He left:
"Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so I would have told you. I Am going to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you to Myself that where I am there you may be also." John 14:1-3
He also described what this place would be like:
Rev. 21:3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”
Understanding more of the Christian hope than most do Edward Mote wrote these words which became a hymn:
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found,
Clothed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne!
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.
Another song writer Randy Scruggs more recently took the theme further, building on what Paul is conveying in Ephesians 3:
" Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary
Pure and holy, tried and true
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
Sanctuary for You."
This truth is not new. In 1864 a brilliant woman named Frances Havergal wrote "Live Out Thy Life Within Me." Passionately in love with her Saviour she learned the Greek and Hebrew languages so she could more intimately understand His Word. She memorized all the Psalms, all of Isaiah and the entire New Testament. In her deep study of Hebrew she came to understand that Shekinah, a word used in the Bible to describe His presence means literally "to abide". It was the desire of her life to have Him fully abide in her. On her tomb are these words: "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:7
Here is the hymn she wrote:
Live out Thy life within me, O Jesus, King of kings!
Be Thou Thyself the answer To all my questionings;
Live out Thy life within me, In all things have Thy way!
I, the transparent medium Thy glory to display.
The temple has been yielded, And purified of sin;
Let Thy Shekinah glory Now shine forth from within,
And all the earth keep silence, The body henceforth be
Thy silent, gentle servant, Moved only as by Thee.
Yesterday I was asked if I believe that those who believe Him and will be alive when He comes will be perfect. Frankly yes I do but I don't worry about it. That is His work. The pursuit of the Christian life is not some great personal achievement. The pursuit is Him - only. What He chooses to do with us after that is up to Him. Tomorrow we will go deeper still...
