Follow the Light (of the world)

Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.14 Therefore He says:
“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”
15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
It seems in life we have a myriad of choices but this is most often an illusion. It is true that when you have a choice between various kinds of fruit to eat it doesn't matter what you choose. However at other times you can have multiple "good" choices but only one correct one.
When I was finishing high school I had the world before me. I had taken every advanced course available to me in both official languages. I was exploring media at Ryerson in Toronto, I was exploring medicine at McGill, I was also considering law and journalism. I job shadowed a reporter and even got an editorial published on censorship. I job shadowed a biologist and a lawyer. I had various adults encouraging me in a variety of academic pursuits.
There was only one problem. When I was 6 years old my grade 1 teacher gave me a sheet of paper. One of the questions on it was: "What will you be when you grow up?" I wrote pastor. My dad still has it. I knew then. I can't remember a time when I did not know.
Ironically every Monday morning a dear friend of mine sends out a devotional of sorts to encourage the pastors she knows. Today it was on the call of God on our life. It pointed out with several quotes that the only safe place to be in this life is walking inside the will of God.
Currently we live thousands of kms away from where we consider "home" to be. We left family and friends that were like family and a great school and a great house and great neighbours. I left churches that I loved and still love. I left teaching grades 11/12 Bible every morning which was precious to me. The interaction with the students was priceless. People asked why we did it. We certainly didn't have to. My boss tried to persuade me to stay. Many tried to persuade us to stay.
The answer for why we came is simple. We want to walk in the light, in His light. Everything else is darkness.
Typically we think of walking in His light as being "good" and "behaving". Certainly there are right and wrong behaviours and choices. However it is much more than that. It is following His lead. He may be calling you to something you don't even want to do. If you refuse you are literally turning from a lit path into darkness.
Jonah was happy to be a missionary in far off Tarshish but doing the right thing in the wrong place is as bad as not doing the right thing at all. Why? Because we only have one calling: "Follow Me."
