Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
Yesterday we talked about how important it is to start every day by letting God fill us. We compared our lives to an empty glass and said we too often leave for the day empty or full of everything but the presence of Jesus.
Someone asked a question that I thought about including yesterday but I didn't want to make it too long so we're addressing it today.
The truth is your mind is not a nice clean empty glass just waiting to be filled. The truth is we are born with a dirty glass. Behavioural geneticists are studying the science of how true this is. The Bible describes it as "...the sins of the Father to the 3rd and 4th generation." All it means is that we inherit character junk and character virtues from our parents and grandparents etc...
Each morning your mind is the same as it was the day before. However we have short term and long term memory. Anyone who has crammed for an exam knows you can fill your short term memory with information, pour it out onto an exam paper and two days later remember almost nothing. Information in short term memory is kind of easy come, easy go. However if you repetitively put the same info into your short term memory over time it becomes part of your long term memory. This is why you only have to learn to read once. By once I mean you learned over and over what the letters were and how they sounded and then basic words etc... All of that information went first into your short term memory and then through repetition into your long term memory and forever became part of you.
You were born with some of the mind of Christ in you. The Bible says He is the light that lights every person who comes into the world. You were also born with a lot of inherited junk in you. Perhaps an addictive personality. Perhaps anger issues. Perhaps issues of insecurity and low self esteem.
Each day by our choices of what we put into our minds, we are either cleaning the glass of the inherited junk and making more space for Him or we are putting more junk in and forcing Him out.
What does this all mean?
It means even if you let Him in today you are not going to instantly become a living embodiment of Jesus. The junk may bubble up and come out. Guess what? It's ok. Not ok in the sense that it won't cause you any problems in the present but ok in that Jesus gets it. He knows. And He carried all your junk to Calvary and it was destroyed in Him. Then He conquered death giving us His perfect life. We are complete in Him. The purpose of the Christian life is to walk with Him. To get to know Him more deeply each day. To become more Light and less darkness because it just is so much better. It doesn't make you more loved or more secure or more "saved" but it does make you more healed and a greater blessing to the world. Besides if you stop letting Him in you will slowly be overcome by the darkness and forget Him altogether and when He comes for you, you won't want Him.
So give Him your glass every morning no matter how dirty and let Him fill it. In time the results will be glowing. Every step with Him is a healing step. Start Today.
