John Day 212 - Sometimes God Doesn't Answer

19:6 Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.”

7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.”

8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

Do you see what's happening? Do you understand why Pilate is more afraid? Originally the accusation against Jesus was that He claimed to be the king of the Jews. This claim could have been delusional. Lots of people have delusional ideas about themselves. Clearly the religious leaders had no interest in Him being their king and Pilate knew Rome was not interested in having a rogue king messing up the precarious political structure.

Up until now it was a pretty easy decision for Pilate. He could please everyone (a politician's dream) by just killing Him. The only hesitation he has had up until now is the Man Himself. He is just different. He has a presence that can't be explained. He speaks with calm yet bold confidence. He stands like a king despite His less than royal attire or circumstances. Can he really kill such a Man?

Trying to appease the crowd by beating and mocking Him Pilate has only dialed up their murderous fervor. Now as He tries to defend His innocence the Jews come with a new charge - "He has made Himself the Son of God".

Were we able to watch the scene unfold I think we'd see Pilate's face drain of all colour. Even amid the mob frenzy it feels like for a moment you could have heard a pin drop on the stone pavement of the courtyard and it would have echoed off the buildings.

It's true. Pilate knows it's true. The look in His eyes, the way He stands, the way He speaks, and the way Pilate feels bared to his very soul just standing in front of Him. Pilate is no religious man but he knows it's true. This man from Nazareth whoever He is and however He got here is not from here.

8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, 9 and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

After the pregnant pause when the colour drained from his face Pilate finally composes himself enough returns inside with Jesus. He has to know. He must ask.

Jesus doesn't answer... He says nothing. He just looks in Pilate's eyes. Pilate can't stand it and looks away.

Lesson for today:

When I flee the crowds and fall on my knees and ask God the Big Questions and get no answer the reason is clear - God doesn't answer me when He knows I already know the answer...

Pilate knew...
