19:39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.
Joseph of Arimathea comes out of the shadows and now so does Nicodemus. The very same Nicodemus that came asking questions at night. The same Nicodemus that stood up in the council of the religious leaders and suggested a point of view that was more favourable towards Jesus. One provides a tomb and the other supplies the burial cloths, myrrh, aloes, and spices. All the things necessary for a proper Jewish burial.
Some translations say he brought 100 lbs and others say 75 lbs. Both are correct. The reason they appear different is because a Roman pound was 12 ounces but a British pound is 16 ounces. 100 Roman lbs is equivalent to 75 British lbs. Either way Nicodemus brought a lot. The monetary value is estimated at 150 to 200 thousand American dollars.
Some see the $$$ and think "Wow Nicodemus really loved Jesus!!!"
What it actually shows is how rich the religious leaders were. It shows why they were so opposed to Jesus. These guys were fully invested in the religious racket they had going. The temple was a cash cow. The synagogues were a cash cow. The constant adding of rules upon rules to keep the people petrified and paying was too lucrative. However what the scam could never buy was peace of mind. Any hope rooted in man's ability to pay and perform is as hopeless as finding wild polar bears in Pakistan.
These men were rich, connected, powerful, influential, and by all outside appearances had the world by the tail but what they didn't have was peace. Every time they had seen Jesus they saw in Him what they lacked. They had everything and He had nothing yet He had everything and their everything felt less than nothing.
Nicodemus risked a lot to come to him that dark night and now he is risking everything. With the world watching Joseph and Nicodemus care for the lifeless body of Jesus as if He were their own son. Gone are their positions and connections. This act may even cost them their lives.
That's the powerful thing about love. It never counts the cost. Best of all love wins.smile emoticon
