20:30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
Last Wednesday as we gathered to study and pray someone in the group raised a question about Mary Magdalene. Long story short they are relatively new to studying the Bible and had heard a rumour about Mary and wanted to know what the Bible said.
We'll we opened our Bibles and read every single verse that mentions her name. It took about ten minutes. To read all the rumours about her would take hours.
What is the point?
The Bible was not written to talk about Mary Magdalene or Peter or Dorcas or Noah or any of the other thousands of individuals mentioned in the Bible. It wasn't even written to give a comprehensive account of the life of Jesus. As long as the Book is, it is actually remarkably short considering it covers eternity past all the way to eternity future.
So if the Book isn't about the individuals in it, and it's not a detailed history book, and it doesn't even give a complete account of the life of Jesus what is the purpose?
The purpose is to tell enough of His Story and how His Story impacted their stories to give us ample evidence to believe that He loves us and is guiding our story. Enough to know we have a Father who has a Home for us and has done and is doing everything necessary to get us to that place where we can be with Him forever.
Peter's identity when he met Jesus was a fisherman. His true identity was a fisher of men. Have you found your identity in Him? Do you know where you fit in His family? That's when life really starts. Don't wait for heaven. Start truly living now. Live in such a way that if Bible stories were still being recorded your name would be in the middle of the action. Some day we will be Home and the greatest rewards we'll have from this life on this dark globe are others with us who saw our light and found the Source.
