2:40 And with many
other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this
perverse generation.”
God has a sense of humour. Those who believe He doesn't need
to read the Story again. Don't get me wrong. The Story is about saving our
lives. It's serious stuff. However that doesn't change the fact that God has a
sense of humour. For example the Bible says Jesus fasted for forty days and
forty nights and afterwards he was hungry... Really?
Yesterday was a stressful day for me after what has been
stressful weeks and months working through some heavy issues. Thankfully with
God leading and working with some great people things are starting to work out.
With that vague glimpse into my life it seems God knew I needed some humour
this morning.
Did you catch the humour I found from Him in the verse above?
Peter is preaching. It's something I have done hundreds and
probably thousands of times. How long he preached we are not told. What we do
know is he used "many words" but Luke could summarize the entire
message in a sentence: "Be saved from this perverse generation".
Only a preacher can stretch a sentence into 30 to 40 minutes
of preaching using "many other words".

Now that we have the humour part done the real question is
"What is so perverse about this generation?"
Think about it. Perverse literally means twisted, crooked,
warped. We often use the word in a sexual sense which is not wrong but it's not
the intent here. Think about how twisted it is that the only nation on earth
that has a temple dedicated to the God of heaven and goes through a ritual
every morning and evening of killing a lamb for the sins of the people were
blind to the Lamb of God when He came? How twisted is it that the very ones who
should have been proclaiming His arrival were instead dogging His every step in
a concerted effort to get rid of Him? How twisted is it that the very nation
who were given the task and privilege of making the Lamb known to the world
turned religion into a payment plan, rather than a free gift of Divine mercy?
How twisted is it that the leader of God's people was actually Satan?
The people indeed needed to be saved from that generation and
if you belong to a church or religious organization that has you believing in
some kind of payment plan you need to be saved from it as well. God says
"Come and buy from Me without money and without price." Jesus paid it
all. All to Him we owe. Sin left a crimson stain but He washed it white as
snow.
I could use many more words but the bottom line is "Be
saved from this twisted, crooked, warped generation."
