2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
We don't talk much about verses 44 and 45 here in North America. It is so contrary to our culture that we perhaps can't even process it. Certainly it isn't a necessity or requirement to live this way so why did they? That's the real question. What principles can we draw from these verses? By understanding why they did what they did we are better equipped to apply their principles to our context.
Unfortunately I need to do some more praying and researching before I can adequately proceed because as of yet I am not sure why they did what they did.
In the meantime I want to share with you some completely unrelated but beautiful thoughts from a friend.
I have reason to believe that I am my father's favourite child! (My other siblings (mistakenly?) each believe that they are his favourite!) He loves to be with me and even though we are separated by the continent we have good visits on the phone on a fairly regular basis. But what he loves most is when we can be together - especially when we can go there, and be "home". Often, when we're talking, my parents ask, "When do you think you can come home?"
I now know a little of this, myself. My grown kids and their children are so precious to me, and when they say they're coming home, my heart just glows! Last week, our daughter, Sarah, came with her family and spent several days. It was wonderful to have the one-on-one, face-to-face, hold-them-in-my-arms time with them.
How our heavenly Father longs for us to be home with Him. What joy it will give Him when we are able to visit face-to-face, one-on-one, and He can physically hold us in His arms. Then His glory will be seen ... and our joy will be complete.
"The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." Zephaniah 3:17
May that time together begin here for each of us! I am praying for you,
