2:46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
The Lord added to the church...
This won't be a popular truth for some but it's true regardless. The legitimate growth of the body of Christ does not occur through clever programming or catchy advertising. It does not occur by recruiting and hiring a super pastor. Authentic growth occurs when Jesus brings searching people to us.
The question, the uncomfortable question, is why doesn't Jesus add more people to our church(es)?
Consider this diagnosis:
“"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..." And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vainglory, provoking one another, envying one another.” There are lessons of the highest importance that not one in twenty of those who claim to be children of God have yet learned. Shall not we learn them before our destiny is forever settled?" R&H June 28, 1887
"We have little enough of Christ's character. We need it all through our ranks, We must reveal that love which dwelt in Jesus. Then we shall keep the commandment [that we love one another], which not one in a hundred of those who claim to believe the truth for this time are keeping..." MR volume 7, pg 389
It's not complicated. Those who find and embrace the love of God will naturally love Him in return and love humanity because they are His children. When the church loves God and their fellow man the Lord will eagerly bring those seeking Him to His church.
If the Lord is not daily adding to our church(es) the reason is undeniably clear. We are not what we profess to be.
The growth of the church is a direct result of the growth of the souls of those in the church. Love creates love. Do not seek growth. Seek God.
