4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
I couldn't tell you how many times I have read this story yet not until today did it register that they also arrested the man who was healed. That's quite a 24 hour period for this guy. He goes from begging to leaping to prison to trial all in the space of one day.
Now he stands there as Peter addresses the council. His mere presence screams without his lips moving at all. What could they say?
Recently I have been reviewing the Exodus, when the Israelites were rescued from slavery. God intervened in such a way that the most hardened could not deny His presence among them. Repeatedly He said He was doing these things to reveal Himself to the Egyptians. For centuries He had been replaced by other gods and strange beliefs. Children had been born into a nation that had forgotten Him for generations. None of this changed His love or concern for them and it was time to reintroduce Himself in ways that could not be explained away, dismissed, denied, or ignored. So completely convincing were His miracles that many Egyptians chose to leave their country and travel with the Israelites to Canaan. Others stubbornly resisted all the evidence and continued to live in defiance of the God of heaven, the God of their fathers.
So it was in that council. The presence of that healed man standing before them was undeniable proof that something beyond any human capacity had taken place. They could see it. They acknowledged it. Yet they continued to refuse to give Jesus His rightful place in their lives.
Sometimes we think if God revealed Himself more powerfully it would make a difference. I am coming to realize that if it would make a difference God would reveal Himself more powerfully. He is not holding back. The Story isn't over. Greater things than Egypt saw are still ahead. However it's not miracles that make believers. It is the calling of His still small voice. That Voice that whispered to Peter "Offer him My healing touch." If we resist His voice we will resist all the other evidences too.
Today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart...
