2:10 "But God has
revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things,
yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except
the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God
except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world,
but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been
freely given to us by God."
I work with people. I also work with wood when I get the
chance. They are quite different. Wood is mostly predictable. Sure it can and
will expand and contract a certain amount but for the most part it is what it
is. The grain of the wood runs in one direction. It stays where I left it
(unless of course amount other person moves it). People are not like wood. Turn
around in a store and the person who was right with you a minute ago is gone.
The grain of a person can also be unpredictable. What they told you yesterday
might be different today. What they liked and wanted yesterday might be
different today. Exactly what is going on inside a person is largely unknown to
anyone but that person. I have even noticed/learned that some people lie so
much that they start to believe their own lies themselves. Give me wood any day
over that!
In Isaiah God says His thoughts are not our thoughts. He says
the distance and difference between His thoughts and our thoughts is like the
heavens above the earth. How could we ever "get inside His head" and
comprehend the incomprehensible?
Concepts like eternity and immortality are completely foreign
to us. The fact we even consider such possibilities or even have the ideas at
all is proof that God exists. There is nothing in our surroundings to suggest
anything being eternal. Science is even saying the sun won't last
forever.
So man has a level of wisdom. We say that what goes up must
come down but even we know that isn't always true. If you can launch something
out past the gravitational pull of the earth it won't come back down. This
wisdom we have is based on experience and observation. However there is a
higher wisdom. God knows things we don't. Of all the things God knows the most
amazing to me is love. Love? Absolutely. Love is not something a science lab
can measure. It makes no "sense" in many cases. We even say things
like "he is a fool for love" or "they are madly in
love".
Being a fool or being mad are generally not positive. Love
does things that logic never would. Common sense rolls his eyes at love. Humans
are lousy at love. We don't even really get it. When we talk about it true
love, self-sacrificing love, stops us in our tracks. Who would die for someone
else? Why forgive? Why help someone who has hurt you? Why spend your own
resources to help someone who has wasted all their own and some of yours
too?
Certainly the theory of evolution and the survival of the
fittest has no explanation for love. In movies villains exploit the love of the
hero for his wife or children as a weakness.
If there were no God love would not exist and while our love
is a distant and poor reflection of His it still exists as proof that He is our
Father.
When we want to hate His Spirit reveals to us, inside us, a
better way. When we want to quit or give up, His love awakens in us fresh
resources to keep going. Think about it. Think how different this world would
be if God’s Spirit was not in us, leading us, and opening to us the capacity,
however imperfect and limited, to see things through His eyes.
Jesus is the wisdom of God made plain. Jesus lived with us yet
with God's character. If you want to know what true wisdom and true love are
watch Jesus. The Spirit of God is with us now to point to Jesus and say
"Did you see that? Did you see how Jesus talked to her? Did you see how
Jesus handled that situation? Did you see what Jesus did there? That's wisdom.
That's love. Do that. Follow Him."
Does every person hear the Spirit of God? Yes. Does every
person listen? No. The more we listen the more we hear and see as He sees. The
less we listen the more blind and deaf we become.
"Today if you hear His voice do not harden your
heart..."
