28:23 When they had set a day for Paul, they came to him at his lodging in large numbers; and he was explaining to them by solemnly testifying about the kingdom of God and trying to persuade them concerning Jesus, from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning until evening. 24 Some were being persuaded by the things spoken, but others would not believe.
Some were persuaded. Others would not believe. The question is why?
How could a group of people all raised in the same teachings and all reading the same sacred texts come to such opposite conclusions? Or did they?
Do you remember when Stephen was stoned? The Bible tells us that when Stephen made the obvious connection between the sacred writings of the prophets and the person of Jesus the men blocked their ears and attacked him. Why did they block their ears?
And what about Judas? Did he betray Jesus because he didn't believe?
When Paul explained who Jesus was to Felix and he responded "You have almost persuaded me to be a follower of Christ" what was he really saying?
Was Pharoah unconvinced about who was really God after all the plagues?
Do you realize that when this world as it is comes to end and a whole new era begins every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Christ is Lord? Dawkins will confess. Hawking will confess. Hitchens will confess. The High Priest who sent Jesus to the Romans to be crucified will confess. Mohammed will confess. Pilate and Herod will confess. Hitler will confess. Satan and his host of rebel angels will confess. Everyone will bow the knee.
But there will be still two groups. Those who confess Him as their Lord and King and those who conceded defeat in their persistent stubborn willful eyes wide open rebellion.
It is true that some for various reasons take longer to figure out who Jesus is and the truth of the great war between good and evil but more of than not those who say they don't believe know exactly what they are doing. Even the devil believes and trembles.
Believing is one thing. Being persuaded is another. Are you persuaded? Hebrews tells us many simply refuse to be persuaded. They block their ears. They walk away. They kill the messenger. Anything to prevent their hearts from being broken.
I truly don't understand. He is better than anything this world can offer times infinity. If you search for Him you will find Him if you search with all your heart.
