6:14 And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
There are a lot of things said in the Bible that are head scratchers. There are other statements made that are easier to pass by but on the way cause you to wonder. Today Paul comes back to the main issue in Corinth - sex. It certainly isn't a new issue nor was it unique to Corinth. It was just a more severe issue there.
Paul seems to indicate that sexual immorality impacts us on a level deeper than any other sin. Science is catching up to this reality. In a long term study begun with 1000 children in the early 1970's who were tracked for over 30 years it was discovered that having multiple sexual partners come in and out of your life had negative effects. Here is a summary quote from the article that reported on the results.
"The purpose of research such as Ramrakha’s and colleagues is not to scold people for having multiple partners or add to the guilt of those who already feel that they’re violating their own moral standards. Instead, it’s to point out that, from a strictly scientific standpoint, engaging in frequent sex with multiple partners does seem to carry a risk." In other words, science is proving it is a bad idea to violate God's plan for sex. You can do some research yourself. The data is piling up as more and more research is conducted. Here is a brief list of the big ones we know about so far:
Cervical cancer in women
Prostate cancer in men
Unhappiness in marriage for those who had multiple partners prior to getting married
There is even budding research exploring the possibility that every sexual partner leaves an imprint. However since that research is relatively new and still developing I'll leave it at that.
What the Bible says is that sex has a deeper impact than anything else. Paul describes all other sin as "outside the body" but sex affects us on the inside. Clearly all sin affects us physically in some way so we can only guess at what science will discover in time about this deeper impact. Note that Paul says a casual sexual encounter with a prostitute makes the two people "one flesh". Is it possible that no sexual encounter is casual?
There is a verse in Proverbs that says a happy heart is like good medicine but a broken spirit dries up the bones. Science has confirmed both to be true. A positive outlook has a great impact on our health and there is a direct link between depression and osteoporosis.
Did you know the divorce rate for first marriages is 45% but the divorce rate for couples who were both virgins prior to marriage is less than 5%?
The Bible is telling us that sex is sacred ground. The Bible is telling us no other sin will impact us more.
But don't forget the good news. The same God that raised Jesus from the dead will raise us up to. Jesus came to seek out and heal. We can't change our past but we can certainly put our present and future into the hands of the Great Physician. Paul loved the people in Corinth. He desired nothing but their good. God reveals to us the truth because He loves us and desires our good.
Our culture portrays sex as casual fun. God and science agree it is anything but casual.
