1 Corinthians Day 114 - Vigilant

16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done with love.

I'm not sure this needs commentary. Let me add a quote and we'll see what happens.

"Only the love that flows from the heart of Christ can heal. Only he in whom that love flows, even as the sap in the tree or the blood in the body, can restore the wounded soul. Love's agencies have wonderful power, for they are divine. The soft answer that “turneth away wrath,” the love that “suffereth long, and is kind,” the charity that “covereth a multitude of sins” (Proverbs 15:1; 1 Corinthians 13:4, R.V.; 1 Peter 4:8, R.V.)—would we learn the lesson, with what power for healing would our lives be gifted! How life would be transformed, and the earth become a very likeness and foretaste of heaven!" Ed. 114

Faith and Love. Stand firm in the faith. What faith? The faith of Jesus. Did you know Jesus has faith in you? He had faith in fumbling Peter and Jesus has no favourites so that means He has faith in you and I too. He knows we will fail Him sometimes. He knows we will make a real mess of things sometimes. But He has prayed for us. He prays for us daily. (Hebrews 7:25) I was talking to a friend last night and they said that sometimes things happen that shake them. Their faith goes a little sideways but then they come back to the realization "Who but God? Where else can I go?" It reminded me of the words of Peter when Jesus shook them with a teaching they couldn't grasp and a bunch of people left. He turned to His disciples and asked "Will you leave too?" It was Peter that answered. "Where will we go? You have the words of eternal life."

The Bible says we love God because He first loved us. It is also true that we have faith in God because He first had faith in us.

Now love. The greatest of all things is love. That's really where our faith is rooted - in God's love. If we lose the belief that He loves us we will give up. His love is extravagant. Before Peter denied Jesus, He knew it was going to happen and instead of being angry or hurt by it, Jesus prepared Peter for both his imminent failure and his future restoration. "I have prayed for you Peter that your faith doesn't fail and when you have been restored strengthen your brothers." We often get so focused on Peter that we forget the rest failed Jesus as well. Jesus prepared Peter so that he in turn could help the rest. Jesus was facing betrayal at the hands of His friends and His concern was them. That's love. Relentless unquenchable love. It is His love that is the only power that can heal. Think about that. Of all the options Jesus had at His disposal to deal with Peter in his betrayal He chose extravagant love. Peter lost faith in himself. His theology was torn to shreds. Everything he had been taught from childhood was pretty much wrong. The almost unbearable ordeal left him stripped of all but one thing - Jesus loves me still.

Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong. We are weak but He is strong. Yes Jesus loves me. Yes Jesus loves me. Yes Jesus loves me. The Bible tells me so.

One more quote:

“Respect shown to the struggling human soul is the sure means through Christ Jesus of the restoration of the self-respect the man has lost. Our advancing ideas of what he may become is a help we cannot ourselves fully appreciate. We have need of the rich grace of God every hour, then we will have a rich, practical experience, for God is love. He that dwelleth in love, dwelleth in God. Give love to them that need it most. The most unfortunate, those who have the most disagreeable temperaments need our love, our tenderness, our compassion. Those who try our patience need most love. We pass through the world only once; any good thing we can do, we should do most earnestly, untiringly, with the same spirit as is stated of Christ in His work. He will not fail nor be discouraged. The rough, stubborn, sullen dispositions are the ones who need help the most. How can they be helped? Only by that love practiced in dealing with them which Christ revealed to fallen man. Treat them, you may, as they deserve. What if Christ had treated us thus? He, the undeserving, was treated as we deserve. Still we are treated by Christ with grace and love as we did not deserve, but as He deserved. Treat some characters, as you think they richly deserve, and you will cut off from them the last thread of hope, spoil your influence and ruin the soul. Will it pay? No, I say no, a hundred times no. Bind these souls who need all the help it is possible for you to give them close to a loving, sympathizing, pitying heart, overflowing with Christlike love, and you will save a soul from death and hide a multitude of sins. Had we not better try love?” FCE 281,282
