4:13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
I love this section! The same faith that beat in the heart of David beats in the heart of Paul. It was David who wrote in Psalm 116 that he believes therefore he speaks. It was the same faith that caused Abel to offer the Lamb, Noah to build the boat, Abraham to leave everything behind, Jacob to wrestle with God, and Moses to return to Egypt. Faith will not cause men to have cookie cutter lives. Our journeys may be radically different in this life but one constant remains - we believe and that belief speaks loud and clear. The fuel that fuels Paul's faith is the death and resurrection of Jesus. If He who lived unselfishly for others and was killed simply for demonstrating what love looks like could walk out of the tomb, don't we have cause to believe and speak?
He died with a promise on His lips. "Let not your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you to Myself that where I Am there you may be also.
He spoke that promise to wildly imperfect people. People who claimed to love Him but we're about to betray Him. Men who meant well but didn't always deliver, people like you and I. How could such people as they were have hope? How can we?
Paul sums it all up in one word - grace. Paul is a preacher of grace. He has experienced the grace of God. He who once killed those who believed in Christ is now laying his own life on the line to disseminate grace. Grace - the unmerited favour of God freely available to all. Paul wants grace to affect and infect every heart. He lives to proclaim it. He is sold out and bought in at 150%. Those who find grace all have the same reaction. They are so thankful to discover the truth about the character of God, to know He is for us and not against us. To know the reality of Jesus' words "Fear not little flock. It is My Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."
Grace. The Greek calls the grace of God scandalous. As one who believes and can't shut up about it, the best criticism I ever hear leveled against me is when people say I talk to much about God's love and grace. It would thrill my soul to die under that criticism. "Here lies Dan, a man guilty of talking too much about the grace of God".
