Isaiah Day 145 - Imagine That!

48:12  “Listen to Me, O Jacob,
And Israel, My called:
I am He, I am the First,
I am also the Last.
13 Indeed My hand has laid the foundation of the earth,
And My right hand has stretched out the heavens;
When I call to them,
They stand up together.

14 “All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear!
Who among them has declared these things?
The Lord loves him;
He shall do His pleasure on Babylon,
And His arm shall be against the Chaldeans.
15 I, even I, have spoken;
Yes, I have called him,
I have brought him, and his way will prosper.
16 “Come near to Me, hear this:
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now the Lord God and His Spirit
Have sent Me.”

Are you catching all this? It's subtle for sure but once you get into the stream of how God is communicating it almost jumps off the page. Cyrus the Great is for Judah Cyrus the unlikely. It makes no sense to them. They can't see him as a deliverer but over and over and over God reaffirms the message. In fact to underscore the fact Cyrus will come and will accomplish what God has predicted he will do, God has to put His resume on the table. He created the earth and the heavens and they do as He directs. Surely if God can do those things, He can send a king from Persia to their rescue right?

But then God isn't done prophesying the future. Another One is coming. Another One who will be unexpected, who won't fit the expectations of Judah, and will come from a place they never thought possible.

In addition, look how His arrival is announced:

“Come near to Me, hear this:
I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;
From the time that it was, I was there.
And now the Lord God and His Spirit
Have sent Me.”

It's not God the Father speaking at all, it's Jesus! He was there from before the beginning. God the Father and His Spirit have sent Jesus! In an Old Testament book where there was no concept of the Three Persons of the Godhead, here they all are and Jesus who is yet to come in the flesh is already with us, talking through Isaiah, promising His arrival, promising that just as Cyrus would be an unlikely hero, so too will Jesus be an unlikely and rejected Hero.
